Our Story

Lawrence Arthur Robins (“Lary”) was a civic leader, philanthropist, accomplished attorney, and most importantly, a loving husband, adoring father, and doting grandfather.  Born and raised in Chicago, he met his wife Karen at the early age of 14 and raised their two sons, Harlan and Chad, in Chicago’s north suburbs.  Lary never missed an opportunity to coach the boys’ sports or act as a surrogate father to any of their friends in need.

Lary and Karen followed the boys to Seattle in 2011, primarily to be active in the grandkid’s lives. While the Robins Nest Family Foundation wasn’t established until 2020, Lary laid out the vision many years before with the fundamental belief that with privilege comes responsibility. This mantra became so central to the family’s core values such that once the family had the resources, it was inevitable that we establish a vehicle to help those in need.

Lary espoused that service starts in your local community, teaching pro-bono at underserved public schools, serving on the Village Board of Wilmette, and financially helping many (anonymously) in need.  Much of this came to light after Lary’s passing, when countless stories recalling his impact on individual’s lives, careers, and financial situation were told. The RNFF is based on the principle of empowering individuals in our local community.

As one of the nation’s premier estate attorneys at DLA Piper, Lary believed wholeheartedly in the boys’ potential and supported the early financing of Adaptive, the primary source of funds for the RNFF.  Lary would be so proud of his legacy.
